    Trade License or Shops & Establishment Registration

    A trade license is a document or certificate that allows the applicant to commence a particular trade or business in a specific area or location. The holder of the trade license cannot use it for any other work or business. It’s a state based registration for local businesses in each state. The main purpose of such registration is to work as per the State laws and secure the benefit for the employees. The license would work as proof of commercial activities for many other registrations. Every entity established with the commercial purpose, including trading and service firms, restaurants, coffee house or hotels and also the place of public amusement must obtain this registration. Generally, the time limit provided for the registration is 30 days from the date of establishment.
    The trade registration application must be made within 30 days of starting to commence a business. Trade license is usually issued within 7-15 days on the submission of the application. The application for grant or renewal of the license will be made to the commissioner in the corporation in the case of most of the states. The procedure differs from state to state and is professionally managed by the local EOB associate.

    When does one apply for a Trade License or Shop and Establishment Registration?

    The usual prescribed time is 30 days of starting a new business. The rules vary from state to state but in most cases it is 30 days with your local government authorities or municipal corporation.

    Yes, every branch of your business has to be registered separately irrespective of the location.

    Various registers giving details of employment, fines, deductions and advances, salary, holidays, etc. should be maintained at the premises under this Act.

    What do I do if the shop or business closes after the registration?

    In such cases where the business has to be shut down or closed, the occupier should notify the Chief Inspector in writing within fifteen days of the closing. The Chief Inspector, after reviewing the request for closure can remove the shop or commercial establishment from the register and cancel the registration certificate.

    We don’t have any workers. Do we still need a registration?

    Irrespective of the no. of employees or workers, every business entity should get a Trade License or Shops & Establishment Registration. In most states, the registration is mandatory within 30 days, irrespective of the number of employees.
