    What is FSSAI and why is the mandatory?

    If you are getting into the food business, its mandatory to get a license from FSSAI. FSSAI stands for Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. FSSAI is an independent body of Government of India that manages the food license registration. This Act secures the laws relating to food and establishes science-based standards for food to control food manufacturing. FSSAI licenses are of three types FSSAI Basic License, Central FSSAI license, and State FSSAI license. With the FSSAI license, there is also an FSSAI registration needed for the petty food retailers. For all food-related businesses such as manufacturing, trading, restaurants, small eateries, grocery shop, importers, exporters, home-based food businesses, dairy farms, processors, it is mandatory to get an FSSAI license or FSSAI registration in India before commencing with the Company. This 14-digit FSSAI license number gives information about the producer’s permit.
    A FSSAI registration certificate comes with a 14-digit License number to FBOs which is required to be printed on all the food products with the FSSAI logo. The license can be applied for a minimum of 1 year to maximum of 5 years; it can again be renewed or re-applied for as per rules stated under Food Safety & Standards Act, 2006.

    Who requires FSSAI Registration?

    If you are a petty FBO, you will need an FSSAI registration. The registration certificate has to be prominently displayed at the establishment.
    This registration is appropriate for all food businesses and allied activities like Storage, sales, distribution, trading, re-packaging, and labeling. Food Businesses having a turnover of fewer than 12 lacs are eligible to obtain the basic FSSAI Registration in India.     Who requires FSSAI License?

    The fee and procedure for obtaining an FSSAI license are more extensive when compared to an FSSAI registration. FSSAI license application should be made in Form B to the appropriate Licensing Authority along with the necessary self-attested declaration, affidavit and annexures, as applicable.
    The issuance of FSSAI license for a period of 1 to 5 years as a request by the food business operator. The higher fee would be applicable for obtaining FSSAI license for more years. If obtaining registration for one or two years, then the person can apply the renewal of license by making an application, no later than 30 days prior to the expiry date of the FSSAI license.
